Merck's KeyCare is a mobile app designed to empower individuals battling lung cancer while undergoing MSD treatment. Far beyond a simple digital diary, this app redefines patient-physician partnership, adept symptom tracking, and comprehensive treatment resources.

The problem

The central challenge of the project revolved around designing an experience that alleviates the stress and uncertainty of the cancer journey, all the while injecting hope and inspiration into the daily lives of patients. Navigating this endeavor with utmost sensitivity was crucial, given the nature of the application—something no person would willingly wish to download.

The solution

In our initial collaboration, we found the app's navigation lacked fluidity and clarity, while overwhelming screen layouts posed challenges for users. Prioritizing user experience, we aimed to redesign the interface for greater intuitiveness and efficiency, guided by a desire to ease patient burdens and introduce hope where possible.

Logo

In our logo sprint, we created a fresh mark that echoes the familiar form of medical awareness ribbons, while simultaneously depicting two people united side by side. This visual narrative epitomizes KeyCare’s pledge to stand by patients throughout their journey, affirming that they are always supported.

Visual language

One standout feature of the project was our incorporation of 2D illustrations, dynamically brought to life as 3D renderings to embody personalized care teams. Tailored to each patient’s region of the world, the aim was to create a sense of familiarity and comfort amidst a challenging journey. More than illustrations, these characters serve as bridges, connecting users with a support system that feels like home.

UX Design

To enhance app functionality, we tackled the possible monotony and discouragement associated with daily symptom reporting. To counter this, we implemented a time-efficient "same as yesterday" button for unchanged symptoms. This user-centric design simplifies engagement, directing focus towards task completion rather than the laborious process of entering repetitive information.
Patient engagement increased from 30% to 70% in our key markets. The team has exceeded my expectations from the very beginning.

The results

Our partnership with KeyCare stands as a testament to the transformative potential that emerges when innovation intertwines with empathetic design. Originally a digital diary, our collaborative efforts have propelled this tool into an empowering platform.
Throughout this project, our focus on refining the user experience has not only facilitated the ease of using the mobile app but has nurtured resilience among patients as they navigate the formidable challenges of cancer treatment. This undertaking is an example of how compassion-driven design can serve as a guiding light, aiding people through their most trying circumstances.
